In 1978, a young woman attending a summer pool party in Cohasset told friends about a particularly lavish home where she worked as a babysitter. The nearby home of Arthur Herrington, a wealthy doctor, was brimming with valuable paintings, the starstruck woman said. The gossip she shared at the party was not meant to cause the family harm or inspire a crime. Herrington’s collection was simply awe inspiring, she said. It did not take long for the babysitter’s tale to plant a seed in the mind of a budding thief eager to pocket some serious cash. Just a few nights after the pool party, on August 17, 1978, David Thomas, a former philosophy student at Suffolk University in Boston, crept into the Herrington home as the family slept upstairs. In short order, Thomas (and an accomplice who has never been publicly identified) took six paintings and two Chinese Ming vases worth at least $2 million all told from the Herrington home. Among the paintings were works by El Greco and Pieter Brueghel. Also stolen: Rembrandt’s Portrait of a Lady.
